Flying Drone Deliveries: The Future Could Be Now, Thanks to Mönchengladbach Airport
Embracing the new dawn of technology, Mönchengladbach Airport (MGL) is paving the way for a greener and more efficient transport system. In collaboration with FH Aachen, Aachen-Merzbruck Airport, the automotive test center Aldenhoven, and potential partners like Droniq, MGL has been tirelessly working on developing drone technology for several years.
Take a peek into the future, where drones could deliver lifesaving organs, defibrillators, or tissue samples swiftly and eco-friendly, all thanks to MGL's relentless efforts. The ambitious project, however, awaits approval from the Federal Aviation Authority.
"Moving in uncharted territory" is an accurate description of this innovative project. The drones, boasting a wingspan of about 3 meters, would fly over urban and rural areas, as well as control zones like airports, ensuring none crash against, say, a rescue helicopter. "We strive to be the pioneers of such advancements" says CEO Dr. Ulrich Schückhaus.
Mönchengladbach's strategic location and its positive financial progress are other reasons to celebrate. After the majority shares were taken over by EWMG in 2018, the annual operating result has continued to improve, edging closer to profitability. In 2024, the airport registered an operating result of -0.89 million euros, a significant improvement from -0.96 million euros in 2023.
Combining a workforce of 801 employees and 70 apprentices, the MGL also witnesses an increase in business flights by 168 percent. Despite a 17 percent decrease in flight movements, primarily due to weather-related issues and a training change, this isn't cause for alarm. The MGL, weather-independent, is yet unable to accommodate flight students in all weather conditions.
With solar energy already providing a climate-friendly airport operation, MGL plans to expand its airport infrastructure for a greener aviation future. Future operations will include new hydrogen drives, fuel cells, or electric aircraft that will be climate-resilient, setting a strong precedent for environmentally sound aviation practices.
MGL's 70th anniversary, scheduled to take place in 2026, will mark a historic milestone. This occasion will be commemorated as part of the next open day on June 21, 2026.
