Forging Ahead in the Future: Government Plans to Install Over 100,000 Additional Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Revamped Ride:

Drivers without a driveway can rejoice as the UK government is pushing for a whopping 100,000 new local electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints across England, making charging more accessible than ever.

On June 13, 2025, Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood confirmed that this massive chargepoint rollout is imminent – perfect for charging overnight for those lacking off-street parking. The initiative adds to over 80,000 existing public chargepoints in the country, thanks to the government's £381 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund [1].

Moreover, the UK government is pledging a whopping £4 billion to support the switch to EVs and secure global trade deals to back British carmakers, protecting jobs and pouring money into the pockets of hardworking families to deliver the Plan for Change.

Minister Greenwood declared, "This government is powering up the revolution by installing a chargepoint every 29 minutes, proving our commitment to making rapid strides."

The £300 million private investment from Believ to add 30,000 new chargepoints nationwide is symbolic of industry confidence in the transition. With an extra £6 billion in private investment expected by 2030, the UK government continues to drive investment in jobs to deliver the Plan for Change.

Guy Bartlett, Believ CEO, enthused: "Industry and government working together will speed up the charging rollout, as we both recognize the scale of investment required and the urgent need."

To fast-track delivery, the UK government has joined forces with local councils, with Suffolk County Council being the first to enter into a contract with a chargepoint operator, paving the way for further rollouts.

Affordability, affordability, and more affordability – that's the EV advantage:

  • EVs can cost as little as 2 pence per mile to run!
  • Two in five used EVs now cost under £20,000, and 29 brand-new models are priced under £30,000.
  • Most new EVs boast nearly 300 miles of range – enough to travel from London to Newcastle on a single charge!

The government remains dedicated to the automotive industry, recently softening regulations for the Manufacturing Mandate, landing crucial trade deals with the US, India, and the European Union (EU), and saving over 150,000 jobs in the sector. Add to that the 1,000 jobs created following a £1 billion investment in a state-of-the-art gigafactory in Sunderland.

Behind the Scenes:

To better support drivers without driveways, the government offers the following:

  • Government Grants: Renters, flat owners, and those with on-street parking can apply for grants up to £350 to install home chargers, alleviating some financial burdens [5].
  • Cross-pavement Charging: The government is championing cross-pavement charging technologies, allowing drivers to install charge points into the pavement for easier access without a driveway [5].
  1. With the vast expansion of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints across England, and government grants available for renters and flat owners to install home chargers, electric-vehicles are becoming increasingly accessible, catering to diverse lifestyles, including those without a driveway.
  2. As the UK government pushes for the adoption of electric-vehicles and invests in technologies like cross-pavement charging, the integration of technology in vehicles aligns with a modern lifestyle, making cars a more efficient and sustainable choice for numerous individuals.
