Four Allied Groups Promote Eco-Friendly Advancements in AI Technology

At the recently held AI Action Summit, four fresh initiatives were unveiled to drive sustainable AI growth. These programs focus on energy monitoring, environmental standards, public resource access, and ethical governance. While financial pledges were abundant, tangible progress in key themes like Public Service AI, the Future of Work, Innovation and Culture, Trust in AI, and Global AI Governance was less noticeable.

Nestled among the offerings was the AI Energy Score, aimed at clarifying AI's environmental impact. According to Bruna Sellin Trevelin, Legal Counsel at Hugging Face, this opacity hinders informed decision-making. By establishing a coalition with Salesforce, Hugging Face, Cohere, and Carnegie Mellon University, they've launched a public leaderboard of 166 models, enabling businesses and AI developers to choose low-impact alternatives.

Another initiative, the Coalition for Sustainable AI, led by France and international partners, aims to align AI with the UN Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on climate action and environmental protection. Though lacking enforceable financial commitments, this coalition envisions standardizing measurements of AI's environmental effect, incentivizing energy-efficient AI development, and crafting sustainability solutions.

In a broader perspective, Current AI seeks to revamp the AI landscape with a $2.5 billion investment from the French government. The initiative plans to expand data access in industries like healthcare, media, and education, promote open standards, and cultivate robust frameworks for accountability and transparency.

Lastly, ROOST, a venture backed by tech companies and philanthropic entities, emerges as a response to AI security and safety concerns. Based at Columbia University, ROOST targets online safety, with a particular focus on child protection in the AI era. As AI-driven content poses harmful risks, their goal is to construct a scalable, interoperable safety infrastructure, beginning with a suite of free tools to combat online child exploitation materials.

These initiatives, led by industry giants, have the potential to make AI more sustainable, energy-efficient, secure, and environmentally friendly, shaping a brighter, greener, and safer AI landscape.
