G-SHOCK's DW-5000R Model is an Accurate Redo of the 1983 Original Watch Design
G-SHOCK Introduces Modernized DW-5000R and Smartwatch Version
In a nod to its rich history, Japanese watchmaker Casio has released two new timepieces as part of its 40th anniversary celebration. Among these new releases is a modernized update on the iconic DW-5000 from 1983, the DW-5000R, and a smartwatch version of the digital watch.
The DW-5000R-1A digital watch is a faithful reissue of the first-gen DW-5000C-1A from 1983. It features a stainless steel case, screw-back case, and flat bezel, with the case height increased to 42.3mm from the original 41.6mm. The bezel and band, however, are now made from resin, which is now bio-based.
The DW-5000R shares many features with the DW-5600, such as a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, flash alert, full auto-calendar, and Super Illuminator LED backlight. One notable difference is the placement of the alarm and hourly time signal indicators on the right side of the dial instead of the left, a departure from the DW-5600 design.
The DW-5000R has a width of 48.9mm and a thickness of 13.1mm, making it smaller than some current members of the 5000 family like the DW-5600. Despite its smaller size, the DW-5000R boasts an improved battery life of 5 years, compared to the original's 3-year battery life.
The DW-5000R-1A digital watch is currently available in Japan and the international market, but has yet to be listed on the United States G-SHOCK site. The expected price of the DW-5000R is $230, making it the most expensive screw-back watch in the current lineup.
In addition to the DW-5000R, Casio has also released a standard-issue recreation of the DW-5000. The manufacturer has not confirmed whether this release will be made available worldwide.
Alongside these new releases, Casio also unveiled a range of innovations on old classics as part of its 40th anniversary celebration. Among these innovations is a smartwatch version of the digital watch, which promises to bring the classic design and functionality of the DW-5000 into the modern era.
The G-SHOCK brand has come a long way since its inception in 1983, and the release of these new timepieces is a testament to its enduring popularity and commitment to innovation. Whether you're a fan of the original DW-5000 or looking for a modern take on a classic design, there's sure to be something for everyone in Casio's latest releases.
