G-SHOCK's New DW-5000R Model Pays Homage to the Original 1983 Design
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Japanese watchmaker Casio has now released a standard-issue recreation of the iconic G-SHOCK DW-5000. First introduced in 1983, the DW-5000 was a trailblazer in the world of smart watches, and its legacy lives on in the new DW-5000R.
Key Differences from the Original DW-5600
The DW-5000R watch boasts several improvements over its predecessor, the DW-5600. For instance, the alarm and hourly time signal indicators are located on the right side of the dial instead of the left, as seen on the DW-5600. The case height has been increased to 42.3mm, a slight deviation from the original's 41.6mm.
Enhanced Features and Durability
The DW-5000R watch maintains the essential features of the DW-5600, such as the stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, flash alert, full auto-calendar, and Super Illuminator LED backlight. It also boasts an impressive water resistance of 200m, making it suitable for diving and other water sports.
One of the most significant improvements is the extended battery life. The DW-5000R watch comes with a lifespan of 5 years, a marked improvement over the original's 3-year battery life.
Design and Materials
The case of the DW-5000R is made from stainless steel with a bio-resin bezel. The bezel and band of the DW-5000R-1A, in particular, are made from resin, but bio-based now. The watch has a width of 48.9mm and a thickness of 13.1mm, making it smaller than some current members of the 5000 family like the DW-5600.
Pricing and Availability
The DW-5000R is currently available in the international market but has not yet landed on the United States G-SHOCK site. The expected price for the DW-5000R is $230, making it the most expensive screw-back watch in the current lineup.
A Tribute to the Past, a Look to the Future
The DW-5000R-1A digital watch is a modernized update on the original DW-5000 from 1983. It's a tribute to the past, a nod to the watch that started it all, while also looking forward to the future with its improved features and durability.
The anniversary celebration included the release of new timepieces and innovations on old classics. The DW-5000R is just one example of how Casio is keeping the spirit of G-SHOCK alive and well in the 21st century.
