Article:

German businesses lead the way in employee bike leasing and sharing programs, outpacing competitors in other countries, according to a fleet barometer survey by Arval. With 14% of companies offering such services, Germany holds the highest share among the 28 nations surveyed. Switzerland follows in second place, with 8% of companies offering bike leasing.

For leasing, the USA and Portugal share second place with 8% each, while for bike sharing, 8% of companies in each of those countries offer the service. The average across all countries is 4% for leasing and 5% for sharing.

While not all employees utilize the offered programs, companies in Germany have significantly higher engagement rates, according to Katharina Schmidt of Arval Germany. The appeal of bike leasing in Germany stems from tax incentives that make it attractive for businesses. Despite the Netherlands being known as a bike-friendly nation with 4% and 3% of companies offering leasing and sharing respectively, demand is lower due to existing private bike ownership and infrastructure.

The growth of these programs in Germany is apparent, with 9% of companies offering leasing in 2020, a number that Schmidt expects to continue rising. In fact, 15% of companies are considering introducing leasing, and 20% are considering bike sharing in the next three years.

The NORMA Group is one example of a German company leading the way in eco-friendly transportation solutions. Employees can lease up to two bicycles, including city bikes, mountain bikes, or e-bikes, with the option to purchase after three years. The lease is deducted from their gross salary, offering tax advantages compared to private purchases.

As part of broader European initiatives promoting sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions, this emphasis on bike leasing and sharing in Germany aligns with e-bike incentive programs across the continent.
