Global dominance of sports programming is held by Prime Video, Disney+, and Netflix on significant Streaming Video on Demand (SVOD) services.
New York - Fresh insights from Nielsen's Gracenote reveal the escalating significance of sports programming on leading SVOD platforms. In Q2 2025, sports content saw a robust 7.8% surge across Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, and Paramount+. Three of these prominent SVOD services, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Netflix, accounted for a whopping 92% of all available streaming sports programming [1][3][4].
Gracenote's analysis labeled sports programming as live games, sports-related news, highlight shows, and documentaries. Remarkably, Warner Bros. Discovery's Max, which boasts a rich live sports offering, was omitted from the Gracenote data shared with the media.
Total content offerings, including TV shows, movies, and sports, expanded by approximately 4,500 or 5% across these services, between February and May [3]. In a drama-filled race, Netflix outpaced all tracked services, with a commendable 18.2% increase in its content library [2].
Following Netflix's impressive rise, Apple TV+ (3.7%), Amazon Prime Video (3.2%), Disney+ (1.6%), and Paramount+ (1%) rounded off the top contenders for content growth [2]. Currently, Netflix holds a substantial 20.1% share of the TV shows, movies, and sports programs available across major streaming services, up from 17.9% in the previous quarter [2].
Sports content was the standout winner among the five top SVOD services, growing by a staggering 7.8% in Q2 [2]. This growth rate was nearly double the expansion rate of movies and just ahead of the growth rate for TV programs (6.9% and 4%, respectively) [2].
Industry pro Bill Michels, Gracenote's chief product officer, stated, "In the grand scheme of SVOD, overall content volume keeps rising, but the apps that offer this content constantly evolve. Effective content discovery is key to helping streamers connect viewers with their preferred entertainment and maximize value from each asset in their catalog" [3].
