Google and Stripe Unveil New Tools for AI Shopping and Payments
Google and Stripe have unveiled new shopping and payment tools designed for AI-related purchases. These innovations, including Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), aim to facilitate AI shopping agents and enhance ecommerce experiences.
AI shopping agents are emerging as a significant sales channel in ecommerce. They can identify products that shoppers might have overlooked, creating new demand. Google's AP2 and Stripe's ACP provide frameworks for authenticating and validating AI-led transactions.
AP2 uses tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital mandates with verifiable credentials to prove authorization of AI purchases. Meanwhile, ACP enables merchants to present products and checkout information in a format usable by AI agents. It uses Shared Payment Tokens to pass payment details securely without exposing shoppers' credentials.
These tools also have the potential to intensify competition among merchants, as AI agents could create platform pressure. However, they could also foster trust and consent in AI commerce, similar to permission marketing.
Google and Stripe's new tools, AP2 and ACP, are set to revolutionize AI shopping and payment processing. By enabling secure, seamless AI-led transactions, these protocols could unlock new demand and enhance ecommerce experiences. As AI shopping agents become more prevalent, merchants and consumers alike can expect significant changes in the ecommerce landscape.
