Google Drive Launches AI-Powered Ransomware Detection and File Restoration

Google has launched new features in Google Drive for desktop to combat ransomware. The AI-powered ransomware detection and file restoration tools are currently in open beta.

The ransomware detection feature is enabled by default for users in Google Workspace organizations, but admins can turn it off. It uses an AI model trained on millions of real-world samples to identify and stop attempts to encrypt or corrupt files en masse. When Drive detects unusual activity suggesting a ransomware attack, it automatically pauses syncing of affected files.

Organizations' Google admins receive alerts in the Admin console security center and via email when ransomware action is detected. Users also receive alerts on their desktop and via email, guiding them to restore their files. The file restoration feature is available to all Google Workspace customers, while the ransomware detection feature is limited to business and enterprise plans. Once the ransomware infection is cleared, users can restore multiple files to a previous, healthy state through Drive's web interface.

Google's new AI-powered ransomware detection and file restoration features in Drive for desktop provide enhanced security and recovery options for users. The tools are designed to adapt to spot novel ransomware and help restore files to a safe state.
