Google is gradually implementing a redesign of their messaging app, Google Messages, based on Material 3, featuring expressive visual elements.

Google Messages Redesign Aligns with Material 3 Design Language

Google Messages has received a significant update, marking the first wave of Material 3 Expressive. This redesign brings fresh changes to the homepage and conversation screen, enhancing usability and visual appeal.

On the homepage, the redesign introduces a more modern layout, with larger and spacious grids similar to those seen on the search page and contact lists. The menu to start a chat visually transforms contact selections from rounded rectangles into pill shapes, improving clarity and interaction. The 'plus' menu on the homepage also receives an update with a more spacious layout and pill-shaped buttons replacing colourful circles [1][3].

The conversation screen now features message threads enclosed in containers with curved top corners, creating a distinct layered effect that includes the app bar, which houses calling shortcuts and the overflow menu. The previous bubbly wallpaper is replaced with a solid color adapting to light and dark themes, leading to a cleaner and less distracting background. The ‘plus’ menu (used to add media, GIFs, stickers, etc.) is redesigned with pill-shaped containers in a more spacious grid. The media picker also adopts Material 3 Expressive with a dynamic button group at the top and a repositioned search bar for better usability [3].

The redesign simplifies and streamlines the interface while maintaining expressive, fluid shapes and colours consistent with Material 3 guidelines. Consistent use of container styling can be seen across the app, and smoother, more dynamic button shapes with integrated icons reflect the broader Material 3 Expressive theme found in other Google apps and Wear OS versions of Messages [1][2][4].

The update also includes Sensitive Content Warnings on Android, providing users with an added layer of protection [2]. Google Messages on Wear OS is also set to receive a Material 3 Expressive redesign [4].

In summary, the homepage and conversation screen in Google Messages gain containerized layouts, pill-shaped buttons replacing circles, cleaner backgrounds, and more spacious, visually cohesive menus, all aligned with the expressive and fluid Material 3 design language [1][3].
