Google Launches Gemini CLI: Free, Open-Source AI Tool for Developers
Google has launched Gemini CLI, a free, open-source command-line tool that brings the power of Gemini AI directly to developers' terminals. The tool, announced by Google's senior director for product management, Ryan J. Salva, is expected to see broad adoption due to its cost-free nature, according to Taylor Mullen, a Google senior staff software engineer.
Gemini CLI offers a generous free usage tier with 60 model requests per minute and a daily limit of 1,000 requests. It operates as a local agent, requiring user confirmation for each command, and accesses the Gemini Pro 2.5 model remotely from the cloud. The tool is extensible via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard and operates under the Apache 2.0 license.
Google demonstrated the integration of Gemini CLI with Imagen APIs for image generation and Veo technology for video animation. The tool comes with robust security features, including native macOS Seatbelt support, containerization, and network traffic routing through proxies. While access to Gemini CLI requires only a Google login, enterprises may incur costs for specific functionalities or concurrent agent use.
Gemini CLI is set to revolutionize natural language command execution in developer terminals, with Google anticipating that the 'vast majority' of developers will use it for free. The tool's free, open-source nature, combined with its extensive features and robust security, makes it an attractive option for developers looking to leverage Gemini AI in their workflows.
