In 2024, the Google Pixel 9 Pro clinched the title of Phone of the Year. However, it seems unlikely that the Pixel 10 Pro will reclaim this accolade in 2025, due to the following reasons.

Google's Pixel 9 Pro earned the title of Phone of the Year in 2024. However, it appears doubtful that the Pixel 10 Pro will maintain this accomplishment in 2025; here's the rationale.

The Google Pixel 10 Pro is set to make its debut at the Made by Google showcase on August 20, 2025. This latest addition to the Pixel series introduces several key improvements over the Pixel 9 Pro, while maintaining many core features.

Powering Up with Google Tensor G5

The Pixel 10 Pro is powered by the new Google Tensor G5 chip, a significant upgrade from the Tensor G4 4nm chip in the Pixel 9 Pro. Built on a 3nm process, the Tensor G5 promises better performance and efficiency, catching up to the best iPhones and Samsung phones in all areas except raw power.

Brighter Displays and Longer Battery Life

Both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro feature a 6.3-inch screen with 1-120Hz refresh rates. However, the Pixel 10 Pro's OLED display is brighter, boasting a peak of 3300 nits compared to the Pixel 9 Pro's AMOLED at 3000 nits. Additionally, the Pixel 10 Pro sports a slightly larger battery at 4,870mAh, promising better battery life.

Faster Charging Speeds

The Pixel 10 Pro improves charging speeds with 30W wired charging, a significant leap from the Pixel 9 Pro's 27W. Furthermore, the Pixel 10 Pro introduces faster 25W magnetic Qi2 wireless charging support, compared to 21W wireless charging on the Pixel 9 Pro.

Storage, RAM, and Software

Both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro offer up to 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage. However, the Pixel 10 Pro drops the 128GB base option, starting from 256GB, increasing the starting price accordingly. The Pixel 10 Pro launches with Android 16 out of the box, while the Pixel 9 Pro received it as an update; OS support for the Pixel 10 Pro will last a year longer.

Camera Hardware Remains Consistent

Camera hardware remains unchanged with a 50MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP 5x telephoto lenses, plus a 42MP front camera. Software and AI enhancements are expected, but no hardware changes have been announced.

New Features on the Horizon

Rumors suggest that the Pixel 10 Pro will launch with a new photography feature called Camera Coach, which uses AI to analyze images and offer contextual suggestions. Another anticipated feature is the ability to edit photos with voice commands.

The success of the Pixel 9 Pro has set high expectations for the Pixel 10 Pro. However, it's important to note that this upgrade primarily focuses on incremental performance, display, and charging enhancements rather than radical redesign or camera changes. As such, the Pixel 10 Pro might not win the Phone of the Year award based on iterative upgrades alone.

The Pixel 10 Pro is expected to be available in a new color called 'Moonstone', and it might potentially test the loyalty of iPhone users. The Pixel 10 Pro might face competition from the iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra. An official teaser video for the Pixel 10 Pro has already been released, building anticipation for its debut.

In the year 2024, Apple Intelligence was one of the dominant software packages in phone keynotes and marketing campaigns. With Google now afforded to innovate iteratively like Apple and Samsung, the Pixel 10 Pro could mark a new era for Google's smartphone lineup.
