Google's Search Console Changes Impact SEO Rankings
Google has recently made changes to its Search Console, leading to shifts in average positions and impressions for many websites. The alterations aim to provide more accurate consumer view data and limit bot activities.
The modifications include removing support for the '&num=100' parameter, which previously allowed for 100 search results per page. Now, listings are restricted to 10 per page, impacting Performance data for numerous websites.
These changes reflect a broader effort to limit AI bots performing 'fan-out' searches, affecting search engine ranking tools that used the parameter. The move is expected to make SEO rank tracking more expensive and potentially reduce results, with some platforms considering capping tracked pages at the first two.
Tim Soulo, who hinted on LinkedIn about Ahrefs' SEO tool likely reporting rankings only from the first two pages for financial sustainability, seems to have been proven right by these developments.
Webmasters are advised to monitor their organic performance in Search Console, wait for data stabilization, and consider using SEO platforms integrated with Search Console. While top-ranking URLs may still be skewed, quantifying bot searches versus human searches remains challenging.
