Greifswald Residents Get Digital Photo Option for IDs from May 2025
From May 2025, residents of Greifswald will have a new way to get photos for their personal documents. The city administration office will now accept digital photos for ID cards and passports, replacing traditional paper prints. This change aims to streamline the process and enhance security.
The new system, set up and tested by the registration office, allows photos to be taken directly at the city administration office. A professional photographer will capture the image, ensuring clarity, especially for babies and toddlers. The photo is then encrypted and uploaded to a secure cloud. When applying for a document, citizens can simply present a QR code at the office to access their photo.
Digital photos for personal documents will cost 6 euros. This change is part of a nationwide regulation by local citizen offices, set to come into effect on May 1, 2025. While currently used only for ID cards and passports, the use of digital photos may expand to other documents in the future.
Starting May 2025, Greifswald residents can have their photos taken digitally for new personal documents. This modern approach, with secure cloud storage and QR code access, is expected to make the process more efficient and convenient. The change is part of a broader national initiative led by local citizen offices.
