Hamburg Port's Clean Port & Logistics Cluster to Launch Hydrogen Refueling in 2023

Hamburg Port is leading the way in green technology with the establishment of the Clean Port & Logistics (CPL) innovation cluster. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, this initiative aims to test the reliable use of hydrogen to power port technology and logistics. The cluster, launched in May 2022 by HHLA, is set to start operating its hydrogen refueling station in 2023.

The CPL cluster has developed a comprehensive plan for hydrogen use, covering operation, safety, repair, maintenance, refueling, and supply. HHLA, collaborating with the German Logistics Association (DSLV) and other logistics companies, is accelerating infrastructure development for emissions-free heavy-duty logistics and port operations. This includes addressing challenges in the heavy truck charging network and promoting solutions like CO2 pricing and public incentives. HHLA has commissioned Linde Engineering to build a hydrogen refueling station at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT). The company is also working with global partners to bring hydrogen technology to market maturity swiftly.

The CPL cluster's hydrogen refueling station is set to commence operations in 2023, marking a significant step towards Hamburg Port's goal of becoming a model for emission-free port operations. This initiative, funded by the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen technology in the logistics and port sectors.
