Hamburg's Energy Future: HEnW Transforms Moorburg Site into Green Hydrogen Hub
Hamburg's energy landscape is set to transform as Hamburger Energiewerke (HEnW) takes over the Moorburg site, previously home to the Vattenfall Heizkraftwerk Moorburg GmbH coal-fired power plant, shut down in 2021. The acquisition, finalized in March 2023, includes the property, buildings, and remaining components, paving the way for a green hydrogen hub.
HEnW's vision for the site is ambitious. The company plans to construct a large-scale electrolyzer, financially supported by the EU's Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) funding and co-financed by the city of Hamburg. This project, dubbed the 'Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub', aims to produce around 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually from 2027, serving as a key energy supplier for the harbor and surrounding industries.
The Moorburg site's strategic location and existing infrastructure make it an ideal choice for this project. Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Hamburg's Minister of Economics, has praised the site's potential for green hydrogen production. The site is planned to be connected to local companies and the supraregional pipeline system Hyperlink via a dedicated pipeline network.
The acquisition also ensures the continuity of employment at the site. The 94 employees of Moorburg GmbH are set to be taken over by HEnW. Moreover, the acquisition provides HEnW with more room to maneuver, allowing for the demolition of the existing power plant and the construction of the new hydrogen production facility.
The takeover of the Moorburg site by HEnW marks a significant step towards Hamburg's goal of establishing a hydrogen infrastructure. The planned electrolyzer, with its substantial green hydrogen production capacity, is set to become a crucial energy source for the city and its industries. The project, supported by EU funding and the city of Hamburg, underscores the region's commitment to a sustainable energy future.
