High-Performance Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 2TB Solid State Drive Evaluation: A Conservatively Good, Yet Unremarkable Storage Solution
The Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 SSD, a new addition to the market, is making waves with its impressive performance and competitive pricing. This drive, manufactured by Biwin, uses the Phison E31T controller and BiCS8 TLC flash, a combination that delivers good 4K QD1 read and write latencies, beating many competitors in this test.
One standout feature of the Plus G4 is its write cache, which extends to over 435GB when empty. When the cache is saturated, the drive writes at 1.5 GB/s, a speed that matches the steady-state write speed of the MP700 Elite. In the DiskBench copy test, the Plus G4 scored above the P510 and close to the MP700 Elite, demonstrating its strong performance.
However, the Plus G4's write behavior is consistent in pSLC and TLC modes, but it may not be the best option for AI or other powerful workloads due to its limitations in sustained writes. This is evident in the PCMark 10 Storage Benchmark, where the Plus G4 has relatively good application performance but falls behind the similarly equipped MP700 Elite.
In ATTO, the Plus G4 tracks closely with the MP700 Elite, but it falls behind on reads starting at 256KiB, likely due to the difference in flash. On the other hand, the Plus G4 scores well in the 3DMark Storage Benchmark, edging out the Micron-fuelled P510 and aligning with the MP700 Elite.
The Plus G4's temperature testing results show that it reaches a maximum temperature of 51°C, more than 30°C below the throttling point, making it a fantastic drive for laptops and other hot or confined environments.
When it comes to competition, the Plus G4 faces off against drives like the Acer Predator GM9000, the Biwin Black Opal X570, the Maxio MAP1602-based Silicon Power US75, the Phison E27T-based Sabrent Rocket 4, and the SMI SM2268XT2-based Kingston NV3.
The Plus G4's pricing in the U.S. isn't the most competitive, but it offers decent performance, power efficiency, and reasonable pricing at the most popular capacities. It is more efficient than the P510 but less efficient than the MP700 Elite in terms of power consumption.
While the Sandisk WD_Black SN8100 is a higher-end option and currently the best of the best, the Plus G4 is a viable alternative and is a safe pick for a last-minute build or project. However, it is not particularly recommended for the PlayStation 5 as it may not deliver optimal performance and has a lower capacity limit of 2TB.
In summary, the Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 SSD is a solid choice for general use, offering good performance, power efficiency, and temperature management. While it may not be the best option for AI or other powerful workloads, it is a reliable drive for everyday use and a great pick for those who value decent performance and reasonable pricing.
