Hitachi Rail's Next-Gen SelTrac to Revolutionize Urban Transit with C$100m Investment

Hitachi Rail, under the leadership of President and CEO Masahiro Kawahara, is set to revolutionise urban transit with its next-generation SelTrac technology. The company has secured a C$100m (£56m) investment from Invest Ontario to upgrade its CBTC signalling system, aiming to reduce costs, minimise carbon footprint, and enhance passenger experience worldwide.

The project, based at Hitachi Rail's York Mills office in Toronto, Ontario, will create 100 new jobs and retain 1,000 highly skilled positions. The investment will facilitate the development of SelTrac (G9), an advanced version of Hitachi Rail's CBTC technology. This new generation will integrate AI, 5G, edge, and cloud computing, promising improved efficiency and sustainability for transit operators.

The upgraded SelTrac system seeks to lower operational costs by optimising train movements and reducing energy consumption. It also aims to minimise the carbon footprint by enabling more energy-efficient journeys. Moreover, passengers can expect an enhanced experience with improved reliability, reduced waiting times, and real-time information.

With the C$100m investment from Invest Ontario, Hitachi Rail is poised to strengthen its position as a global leader in urban transit technology. The development of SelTrac (G9) is expected to bring significant benefits to transit operators and passengers worldwide, while also boosting the local economy through job creation and retention.
