Electric Vehicle Growth in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt, the German state, has seen a modest increase in the number of registered electric vehicles, although the level remains relatively low. As of January 1, 2025, electric vehicles accounted for 1.6% of all registered passenger cars in the state, totaling 19,343 pure electric vehicles, according to the State Statistical Office. This figure represents an increase of 2,941 from the previous year, signifying a growth rate of 17.9%.

With a total of 1,521,611 motor vehicles registered in the state as of that date, the overall fleet increased by 8,145 vehicles compared to the previous year. Despite the growth in electric vehicles, gasoline-powered cars remain the dominant choice, with approximately 797,000, followed closely by diesel vehicles at 329,000. Women comprised 37.7% of passenger car registrations, while females accounted for just 11.8% of motorcycle registrations.

Trends in Europe and Germany suggest potential growth opportunities for electric vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt. In 2024, electric vehicle (EV) sales slumped but rebounded strongly in the first quarter of 2025, with a growth rate of over 23%. However, the shift towards new EVs has slowed in Germany following the withdrawal of government incentives, with more people opting for used electric vehicles.

In Germany, around 61% of individuals purchasing electric cars chose used vehicles in early 2025, compared to a previous high of 39% for new vehicles before the incentives ended. This trend could be reflected in Saxony-Anhalt, where the overall share of electric cars is lower compared to other regions like Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and Baden-Württemberg.

Saxony-Anhalt's role in semiconductor production could significantly influence the automotive industry's technological advancements. The expansion of charging infrastructure and support for local initiatives at the national level could indirectly benefit the region, while the growth in used EV sales could become a key factor in increasing the overall penetration of electric vehicles in the region.

Despite the potential challenges, such as higher costs and limited incentives, the growth in used EV sales offers a promising avenue for increasing the adoption of electric vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt, in line with broader trends in Germany and Europe.

The community policy in Saxony-Anhalt could consider initiatives to boost the finance for purchasing used electric vehicles, encouraging more individuals to adopt this alternative in alignment with the increasing trend observed nationwide. To further stimulate growth, vocational training programs focusing on the maintenance and repair of electric vehicles could be implemented within the local transportation sector, leveraging the region's technology competency in semiconductor production for auto industry advancements.
