"Innovation Takes Center Stage at the Copying Facility"

In a captivating lecture at Pforzheim University, leading German China specialist Frank Sieren discussed the complexities and implications of China's ascendancy as a global power. Under the title "Superpower China: Inevitable Ascendancy or Colossus on Shaky Ground?", Sieren addressed a crowd of 400 in-person attendees and another 200 viewers via livestream.

Challenges

Sieren outlined several challenges that the world faces as China rises. These include geopolitical tensions with the US and neighbouring countries, human rights concerns, economic competition, and dependence on China for supply chains and manufacturing. Issues around trade imbalances, territorial disputes, and ideological differences pose risks for global stability, while ongoing concerns about China's human rights record, including censorship and restrictions on freedoms, affect its international relationships.

Opportunities

Despite these challenges, Sieren also highlighted opportunities for constructive engagement and global progress. China's advancements in technology and infrastructure present opportunities for global partnerships, investments, and innovation sharing. With a large and increasingly affluent population, China offers significant market potential for international businesses.

Sieren emphasised that China can contribute positively to global efforts, such as climate change initiatives and global development efforts. Enhanced cultural and academic exchanges present opportunities to improve mutual understanding and collaboration.

A Nuanced Picture

Sieren's lecture painted a nuanced picture, recognising that while China's rise brings significant challenges, it also offers opportunities. He asserts that it is a "fundamental mistake" to never consider China's perspective and past. Sieren explained that China was once a world power but missed the industrial revolution in the 19th century due to arrogance. However, China has proven the West wrong by venturing into electric mobility and battery research early on.

The Future

China aims to return to a 30% share of the global economy by being innovative again. It is the largest polluter but also the world champion of innovative environmental technologies. Sieren suggests that a new world order could emerge at the end of this transition.

Professor Dr. Nadine Walter introduced the General Studies lecture on China at Pforzheim University. Three weeks ago, autonomous flying passenger drones were approved for everyday use in China, marking another step in China's rapid development. Sieren, who has lived in Beijing for almost 30 years and has written numerous bestsellers about China, warns not to underestimate China's rise and realistically evaluates it. He mentions that 170 out of 192 countries are not participating in the sanctions against Russia, indicating the West needs to provide more compelling reasons for placing its interests.

In conclusion, Sieren's lecture provides a thought-provoking analysis of China's rise as a global superpower, recognising both the challenges and opportunities it presents for the world.

Technology advancements in China offer opportunities for global partnerships, investments, and innovation sharing. China's market, with its large and increasingly affluent population, presents significant potential for international businesses.
