Article Title: Germany Lags Behind in Remote Work Opportunities Among Major Western Economies

In the ever-evolving job market, the availability of remote work has become a significant factor for many job seekers. A recent analysis of job advertisements and search queries on Indeed, the world's leading job site, reveals some interesting trends among major Western economies.

In the second quarter of 2021, Germany had the second-highest share of job ads allowing remote work among the five major Western economies, with a rate of 14.8%. However, as of mid-2025, Germany offers around 6.4% of job postings as fully remote, placing it below some major Western economies in terms of remote work availability.

The United Kingdom leads among Western countries with 9.0% fully remote jobs and 40.1% offering hybrid roles. The United States has about 8.6% fully remote and 13.1% hybrid job postings. France offers about 3.1% fully remote jobs, while Italy has 5.3% fully remote offerings. Ireland has slightly more than Germany, with 9.6% fully remote positions.

This data from LinkedIn job postings in June 2025 highlights that the UK remains the global leader in remote and hybrid job opportunities, significantly higher than Germany and other major Western European countries. The U.S. also has a higher percentage of fully remote jobs than Germany but offers less hybrid work compared to the UK.

Interestingly, the percentage of job searches for remote jobs in Germany is almost five times higher than before the coronavirus pandemic, with 3.3% of all job searches on Indeed being for remote jobs. However, the home office offer in Germany decreased from 15.2% in the previous quarter (April to June).

The UK, on the other hand, saw a slight decrease in the home office offer, from 15.9% to 15.1% in the same quarter. In France, the home office offer was 11% in the same quarter. In contrast, Canada had a home office offer of 13.8% in the second quarter of 2021.

Remote work is a decisive factor for many people in their job search in Germany, particularly for childcare and caring for relatives. Despite some corporate pushback in the U.S. and elsewhere against remote work, demand for flexible work options remains strong globally, making hybrid models the dominant evolving trend in 2025.

European governments, including Germany's neighbors, are also increasingly protecting remote-friendly rights, which could influence future growth in flexible working roles. With more than 610 million people from over 60 countries registered on Indeed, the demand for remote work opportunities is likely to continue shaping the job market in the coming years.

  1. To address the gap in remote work opportunities, Germany could consider implementing a community policy that encourages partnerships with organizations offering vocational training in technology and business sectors, preparing its workforce for the advancement of remote work.
  2. In light of Europe's growing support for remote-friendly rights, finance may play a crucial role in providing necessary resources for vocational training programs that emphasize the skills required for remote work, fostering a more competitive workforce in Germany.
