New Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z Plug-In Hybrid SUVs Unveiled by Great Wall Motor

Great Wall Motor (GWM) has launched two new additions to its Tank series, the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid SUVs. The new models, unveiled on July 25, 2021, boast advanced technology, luxury upgrades, and strong off-road capability.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine setup. The Hi4-T features a single electric motor and a 37.1 kWh battery pack, offering a pure electric range of about 110 km and a combined system output of 300 kW with 750 Nm torque. On the other hand, the Hi4-Z comes with dual electric motors, a larger 59 kWh battery, a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, delivering a combined system output of approximately 645-654 kW, 1,195 Nm torque, and a pure electric range of around 201 km. The Hi4-Z accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about 4.6 seconds.

Both models come equipped with modern driver assistance technology, including a Hesai ATX lidar installed on the roof and the Coffee Pilot Ultra system. However, it is not confirmed whether the lidar is standard across the entire series. The interior features full Nappa leather seats with ventilation and heating functions, a 17.3-inch 3K ceiling entertainment screen for rear passengers, and a rear seat backrest with a 25° to 35° adjustment angle.

The exterior design of the Tank 500 has received subtle tweaks, following the outline of the current model with minor adjustments to the front grille and a new "GWM" logo in the rear. The new Dunhuang Green color has been added to the exterior paint options, but it is not confirmed whether this is standard across the entire series. The body dimensions remain unchanged, measuring 5078/1934/1905 mm (l/w/h), and the wheelbase is 2850 mm. The approach angle is 29°, the departure angle is 24°, and the minimum ground clearance is 210 mm, ensuring strong off-road capability.

The dashboard retains a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 14.6-inch central control screen. A paddle shifter has been added to the steering wheel column, providing a sportier driving experience. The maximum trunk volume is 1,489 L, and a 50W refrigerator embedded in the center console has a temperature range of -6°C to 50°C.

The pre-sale of the new Tank 500 series is expected to start in August. The current Hi4-T and Tank Hi4-Z on the Chinese market have a starting price of 335,000 yuan (46,800 USD) and 363,800 yuan (50,900 USD), respectively. The new models position themselves as high-end, tech-rich plug-in hybrid SUVs targeting a premium market segment, although pricing details for the new series require further inquiry from GWM or dealer sources.

In the first half of 2025, 21,344 units of the Tank 500 series were sold, demonstrating strong demand for these off-road capable, technologically advanced SUVs. The Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z are set to redefine the plug-in hybrid SUV market with their powerful performance, luxurious amenities, and advanced technology.

The new Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid SUVs, unveiled by Great Wall Motor, cater to the luxury and high-end automotive segment of the finance industry. They are set to disrupt the plug-in hybrid SUV market by integrating advanced technology in transportation, including modern driver assistance systems and electric powertrains, positioning them as tech-rich contenders in the automotive industry.
