NIO Unveils Global Debut of the ET7 Electric Sedan for Autumn 2025
Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced plans to launch the full-size electric sedan, the Onvo L90, and the highly anticipated NIO ET7, both at budget-friendly prices. While the Onvo L90 is already available for purchase with a battery rental option at $25,000 USD, the global launch of the NIO ET7 is scheduled for autumn 2025, debuting at NIO Day 2025.
The NIO ET7, first unveiled in China in 2019, has undergone several updates since its initial concept. The production version shows a slightly bloated design compared to its earlier concept, and it is a sedan with a trunk, not a fastback. The interior features a minimalist design with a small free-standing screen in front of the wheel and a mid-size touch screen in the center, although it may seem underwhelming compared to competitors like the Tesla Model S.
Powering the NIO ET7 are two electric motors manufactured by a NIO subsidiary, Weiran (Nanjing) Power Technology. The front motor has an output of 244 hp, while the rear motor boasts 407 hp, with a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour. The battery pack is swappable, allowing for ultra-fast charging with NIO's high-voltage 925V system.
The NIO ET7 is equipped with an impressive autonomous-driving package called Aquila Super Sensing. This system includes an ultra long-range high-resolution LiDAR, eleven 8MP high-resolution cameras, five millimeter wave radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors.
Nio's global expansion plans are well underway, with active efforts in the Middle East through a joint venture since late 2024, and prior presence in Europe (Norway). However, the latest direct launch event for the updated ET7 model is currently scheduled around NIO Day 2025, and no precise global rollout dates or market-specific strategies outside China have been confirmed as of August 2025.
Inside the NIO ET7, no buttons or switches are visible. Instead, joystick-like touch buttons are located on each side of the steering wheel, and a large start button is on the center tunnel. The first images of the pre-production NIO ET7 were seen in July, and the official launch on the Chinese car market is expected in early 2022.
Development of the NIO ET7 was delayed due to financial troubles at NIO and the Covid-19 pandemic. The public debut of the NIO ET7 is expected at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November. The NIO ET7's current contract for manufacturing is with Jianghuai Automobile (JAC), running until 2024.
While the exact plans for markets outside China are still emerging, it's clear that Nio is committed to expanding its global presence and bringing advanced technology to electric vehicles worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates at or after the autumn 2025 event.
