Investment company alerts thousands of clients about potential data breach - learn protective measures

In a significant cybersecurity incident, global venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners suffered a data breach on October 25, 2024. The attack, which affected approximately 12,657 individuals, remains unsolved as the responsible hacker group has yet to be identified.

Insight Partners, founded in 1995 and headquartered in New York City with additional offices in London, Tel Aviv, and Palo Alto, manages around $90 billion in assets. With a portfolio of over 875 companies worldwide, the firm has been a key player in the software and technology industry.

The attackers used a sophisticated social engineering method to gain access to the affected servers. On January 16, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m. EST, the attackers began exfiltrating data and encrypting the servers. However, as of April 2025, there is no evidence that the files were abused in the wild, and no new evidence of data misuse has been reported so far.

The stolen information includes sensitive data such as banking and tax information, personal information of current and former employees, information related to limited partners, as well as fund, management company, and portfolio company information. Insight Partners has started notifying affected individuals and has set a deadline of the end of September 2025 to complete the process.

In response to the incident, Insight Partners has recommended users sign up for identity theft protection services provided through Experian. Additionally, users are advised to change all enterprise and personal passwords, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and consider placing a freeze on their credit reports to protect themselves from potential fraud.

Despite extensive investigations, no group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. Insight Partners has filed a new report with the Office of the Maine Attorney General to aid in the ongoing investigation. As the situation develops, the firm continues to work diligently to ensure the security and privacy of its clients' data.
