In the early 20th century, a young Italian woman named Gabriella Angelini made history by becoming the first Italian woman to complete a trans-European flight. This extraordinary achievement, which took place in the summer of 1932, saw Gabriella fly across eight different European countries, marking a significant milestone for female aviators in Europe.
Born on September 24, 1911, in Susa, Italy, near the French border, Gabriella came from a wealthy family. Her mother, a successful pharmaceutical industry professional, tried to encourage traditional interests for her daughter, but Gabriella's passion for aviation was unyielding.
Gabriella started taking flight lessons at Aero Club Milano and, at the age of 19, received her pilot's license in 1931. Her first competition after receiving her license resulted in a 7th place finish, but this did not deter her. Instead, it fueled her ambition to follow in the footsteps of other brave aviators and pull off spectacular flights.
One year after getting her license, Gabriella embarked on a dangerous journey to fly across Europe. The planned route for her European flight was from Italy to India, passing through Rome, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Iraq, and Pakistan. However, tragedy struck during her planned flight from Italy to India, as her aircraft crashed in the Libyan desert, resulting in her death.
Despite her untimely death, Gabriella's legacy remains significant as a symbol of courage and progress for women in aviation. Over 120,000 people attended her funeral to pay their respects, and her body was buried in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan.
Gabriella's European flight was completed without major issues, but the landing was less than perfect due to her aircraft running low on fuel. This daring flight made her very popular among people, and she was given the Golden Eagle medal. One year after her death, her mother published her diary for the public to see another side of her.
