Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Group) is evaluating the use of SpaceX's Starlink satellite network to improve onboard internet access for passengers traveling across its rail system. This move comes as train operators worldwide are exploring Starlink-based solutions to enhance onboard internet services.

The goal of these tests is to enhance passenger connectivity on trains and in stations, particularly in areas where traditional mobile signals are weak or inconsistent. If Italy moves ahead with implementing Starlink across its rail system, it may be the first country in Europe to do so.

In Italy, FS Group is conducting a series of tests to determine if Starlink's satellite internet service can provide a more stable and high-speed Wi-Fi experience across its network. The current initiative between FS Group and SpaceX is exploratory, with technical and feasibility assessments ongoing.

Starlink's satellite-based infrastructure could offer a consistent and fast connection regardless of location on the Rome-Milan high-speed corridor, addressing the frequent dead zones and poor coverage typical of terrestrial cellular networks along train routes.

The terminals used are compact, flat antennas capable of automatically tracking satellites and adjusting to maintain optimal signal even when the train is moving quickly. This technology allows continuous switching between multiple visible satellites to avoid signal disruption from obstacles or changing locations.

In the United States, Starlink service has already been deployed on some trains, leveraging the user terminals' ability to maintain consistent internet connectivity on fast-moving vehicles, thus improving passenger experience during journeys. Similarly, ScotRail in Scotland is currently testing Starlink on some of its trains, providing not only customers but also ScotRail's engineers with reliable high-speed internet.

Train operators must balance technological sovereignty considerations (favoring European providers) with performance and coverage benefits provided by Starlink’s extensive satellite network. The large satellite constellation allows broad and uninterrupted coverage, reducing dead spots prevalent in terrestrial cellular networks.

This integration of Starlink satellite internet aims to dramatically improve internet speeds and reliability on trains in Italy and internationally, transforming passenger Wi-Fi from a frequent frustration to a smooth, accessible experience.
