Jaguar Land Rover Extends Production Shutdown to October 1, 2025 After Severe Cyber Attack

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has extended its global production shutdown until October 1, 2025, following a severe cyber attack that has disrupted operations worldwide. The automotive industry awaits signs of stability as JLR works to recover from the incident, which has had significant repercussions for the wider supply chain and thousands of jobs.

The cyber attack, believed to be ransomware, has affected JLR sites in the UK, China, Slovakia, Brazil, and India, with over 33,000 UK staff impacted. Assembly lines are running minimal shifts, and maintenance teams are idling. The attack has also led to about a quarter of JLR's suppliers pausing production and laying off workers, with more expected to follow. An estimated 200,000 jobs across hundreds of supplier companies are at risk.

Concerns have been raised about a possible connection between Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which JLR has outsourced significant IT and cybersecurity operations to, and the cyber attack. However, TCS has not officially confirmed direct involvement. Government officials are now scrutinizing the resilience of digital operations and the risks posed by outsourcing IT to international partners. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and TCS are coordinating to ensure a secure phased restart of JLR's operations. In India, JLR's operations have a backlog of 3-8 months depending on the model due to the attack.

The extended shutdown at JLR highlights the severe impact of cyber attacks on global supply chains and the importance of robust cybersecurity resilience. As investigations continue, the automotive industry and government officials are assessing the risks and vulnerabilities in outsourced IT operations. The phased restart of JLR's operations is expected to be a complex process, with significant implications for the wider economy and employment.
