Japan Deploys Fighter Jets to Europe for First Time Ever
Japan's Defense Minister, Minoru Kihara, has announced the first-ever deployment of Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighter jets to Europe. The 'Atlantic Eagles' mission, involving two F-15 fighters and around 180 personnel, is a significant step in strengthening UK-Japan defense ties.
The mission, led by General Morita Takehiro, JASDF Chief of Staff, began on 14 September and will conclude on 1 October. It includes stops at bases in the US, Canada, the UK, and Germany. The deployment is supported by KC-767, KC-46A, and C-2 transport aircraft.
Air Chief Marshal Richard Smyth, RAF Chief of the Air Staff, welcomed the deployment, describing it as a 'powerful symbol' of the advanced partnership between the UK and Japan. He noted that the mission marks the beginning of expanded RAF-JASDF collaboration, reinforcing shared commitments to peace, stability, and global security. Both air chiefs agreed that Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security are increasingly linked, and the 'Atlantic Eagles' deployment aims to deepen mutual understanding and enhance interoperability.
The 'Atlantic Eagles' mission, involving two F-15 fighters, is a historic first for the JASDF. It builds on recent UK-Japan defense ties, including joint training and visits by the UK's Carrier Strike Group to the Indo-Pacific. The deployment is expected to strengthen the bond between the RAF and JASDF, contributing to global security efforts.
