JRC unveils Border Security Research Facility
Lighting Up the Frontier: The EU's Innovative Border Security Boost
Stepping into the vibrant city of Geel, Belgium, the European Commission's groundbreaking Joint Research Centre (JRC) just launched the Border Security Lab network. This network is a powerhouse, collaborating closely with the EU's law enforcement agencies to push the boundaries of border technology.
The Border Security Lab's primary mission? To eliminate the need for internal border controls within the EU. By pooling resources from the JRC's existing labs - such as the Explosives Trace Detection Lab, Aviation Security Lab, Narcotics Lab, Nanobiotechnology Flagship Lab, and Counter-Drone Living Lab – it promises a security revolution.
What's the JRC's plan, I hear you ask? Well, their experts will work tirelessly to create and test novel border management technologies and provide vital training to border security personnel. And guess who they're teaming up with? Frontex, Europol, EU-Lisa, EUDA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and other international partners. Talk about a dream team!
As Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, so excitedly put it: "With over 1.3 billion people crossing our external borders annually, action is vital. By enabling stakeholders to collaborate in co-creating and testing new technologies, the JRC Border Security Lab supports needs-driven research, ensuring effective management of external borders and a safe, free Schengen area."
