Kazakhstan's Treasury Booms as Foreign Internet Firms Pay VAT

In 2025, foreign internet companies significantly boosted Kazakhstan's treasury, contributing a total of 41.8 billion tenge. This marked an impressive 18 billion tenge increase from the previous year. The surge in revenue follows the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) for foreign internet platforms in the country.

Since the VAT implementation, 116 foreign companies have conditionally registered, with 18 new companies joining the list in 2025. Notable additions include Chess.com, OpenAI, Canva, and LLC 'Okko'. Meanwhile, established companies like Temu, Valve Corporation, and Apple emerged as the largest taxpayers, contributing 6.2 billion, 5.3 billion, and 5.2 billion tenge respectively.

Next Retail Ltd. and Alibaba.com also began paying taxes to Kazakhstan's budget. In total, foreign internet companies have contributed 111.6 billion tenge since the VAT's introduction. However, specific details about companies paying taxes in 2026 remain unavailable, along with any official statements from the relevant ministry committee.

Kazakhstan's new tax policy has proven successful, attracting more foreign internet companies and significantly increasing revenue. Moving forward, companies that evade VAT or fail to register will face blocking and public listing. The country continues to monitor and manage this new revenue stream, with the ultimate goal of further boosting its budget.
