KSB Commits Significant Finances Towards Major Heat Pump Producers
Germany - Frankenthal-based KSB Investing Heavily in Heat Pump Manufacturer Ecop
KSB, a renowned pump and valve manufacturer based in Frankenthal, is set to invest millions in acquiring a near 20% stake in Austrian industrial heat pump developer, Ecop. This strategic move aims to bolster KSB's energy business and provide access to the rapidly expanding market for large-scale heat pumps that deliver thermal outputs ranging from 500 kilowatts to 10 megawatts.
Established in Vienna in 2011, Ecop has developed a highly efficient rotary heat pump capable of achieving a high temperature lift in a single stage. Utilizing a gas mixture as the working fluid and employing rotary technology, the heat pump exhibits efficiency across a broad and flexible temperature range, enabling optimal use of existing heat sources. The technology can be applied in various industries with heat demands such as paper and textile manufacturing, food production, and district and central heating supply, replacing heat generation from fossil fuels. With outputs up to 1 megawatt, Ecop caters to the significant market for large-scale heat pumps, thanks to numerous patents protecting its innovative technology. Currently, the company boasts around 20 employees.
For KSB, this partnership marks a strategic step towards decarbonized heat energy production and storage. "There's a growing energy demand worldwide, with the energy mix shifting towards CO2-avoiding methods," explains Dr. Stephan Timmermann, spokesperson for KSB's management board. "Approximately two-thirds of industrial energy demand is for heat. Decarbonizing thermal energy presents a significant opportunity. Ecop and KSB share not only cutting-edge technology but also a commitment to sustainability."
The alliance benefits both companies from numerous technical synergies, from pump components to research and development. Fabian Sacharowitz, CEO of Ecop, states, "With KSB, we've gained the partner we need to globally expand our technology and lead in higher output ranges for large-scale heat pumps."
KSB is a leading global manufacturer of pumps and valves, with headquarters in Frankenthal. The corporation is represented on five continents, thanks to its own sales companies, production facilities, and service operations. In the 2024 financial year, the corporation reported a turnover of approximately 3 billion EUR with around 16,400 employees.
