'La Palma' Loses its Position in Netflix's Top 10 to a New Series

As we approach Christmas, the leading series with a Christmas backdrop, Black Doves, has dropped significantly on Netflix's Top 10 list, making way for other non-seasonal shows.

For some time now, domesticated disaster series La Palma has been reigning supreme on the chart, even in the US, which is quite uncommon for a foreign-language series, in this case, Norwegian. However, its reign has been overthrown by the reemergence of Virgin River, one of Netflix's biggest slept-on hits returning for its sixth season. And let me tell you, this doesn't happen often on Netflix.

Fortunately, Netflix seems to be moving away from its split-season concept as all episodes of Virgin River season 6 are now available. I ponder if they recognized the significant dip in viewership during the breaks in the series that employed this method, and considering that the number of people who complete a series is a crucial metric for them, this might have outweighed the desire to keep subscribers for more than a month to watch their favorite shows. I'm sure they have all the data, though I don't think this strategy is completely dead yet.

La Palma is classified as a limited series, considering how many tidal waves one can experience. It's an odd scenario as this was the most-watched TV show in the country for a while and it doesn't even have enough reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score, with only two critics providing positive reviews. Fans are less enthusiastic as the show only boasts a 30% audience score.

On the other hand, Netflix announced that Virgin River would be getting a seventh season before the sixth season even aired, given its popularity and low cost of production. Once again, season 1 has just one critic review and not enough audience reviews for a score. Generally speaking, the show gets positive reviews, with a 81% critical score across the previous 5 seasons. This is also a series frequently overlooked by critics, with only 5 scored reviews for season 5. And it's quite peculiar, considering the high viewership. I guess journalism in the entertainment field is underfunded.

Volcanic activity intensifies on theSpanish island of La Palma

We'll see how long Virgin River can hold on to the top spot, but I suspect it'll last at least a few days. Squid Game season 2, set to premiere on December 26, will undoubtedly rule the list throughout the new year.

Despite La Palma's reign at the top of Netflix's charts, it has not made it to Netflix's recent Top 10, which now features non-seasonal shows like Netflix top 10 series. Interestingly, La Palma, a domestic disaster series from Norway, has garnered more viewership than many English-language shows, even though it's classified as a limited series with a low number of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
