In a significant move, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced Part 146, a regulatory framework for "Automated Data Service Providers" (ADSPs). This new rule is designed to oversee the digital infrastructure enabling safe Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flights.

ADSPs, third-party technology companies, supply essential backend services that are critical for coordinating drone flights in a safe, observable, and deconflicted airspace. Services include strategic deconfliction, conformance monitoring, airspace data delivery, and conflict alerts.

Unlike Part 108, which regulates drone operators and manufacturers, Part 146 focuses on the digital infrastructure needed to scale BVLOS operations safely. ADSPs certified under Part 146 function similarly to air agencies, ensuring drones adhere to flight plans and safely avoid collisions. Operators can also provide these services themselves if they meet Part 146 compliance standards.

The new Part 146 is designed to balance rigorous FAA oversight with enough flexibility to adapt as technologies evolve and the industry grows, reflecting the rapid development in automated data services supporting drone operations.

Meanwhile, in the world of drones, HoverAir has launched a new self-flying selfie drone named Aqua, designed to take off, land, and operate on water. The Aqua drone is waterproof, featuring hydrophobic materials and vacuum seals, and weighs under 249 grams, exempting it from FAA registration. It comes with a 1/1.3'' sensor, 4K at 100fps video, and over 15 waterproofing features. The drone is designed to follow the user on various water adventures, including surfing, kayaking, and even in gusty winds up to 33 knots.

In another development, Canadian drone company AVSS has received a nationwide Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) to deploy its SnowDart system for avalanche control. The drone-enabled method enhances safety by reducing helicopter use and risky on-the-ground operations, while offering greater precision and cost savings.

BETAFPV has also released a featherweight drone that carries the DJI O4 Air camera. The exact specifications of this drone are not mentioned in the text. Additionally, Ellis van Jason, a filmmaker and FPV pilot, has released an 8K FPV drone video tour of Africa's landscapes and wildlife. The 8K FPV drone video features shots from Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Namibia and compiles 35 terabytes of his best work.

Lastly, BETAFPV's Pavo Femto FPV drone is incredibly small, weighing just 0.12 pounds (54.77 grams) including the DJI O4 Air Unit, and optimized for 4K/60fps video capture. The drone comes with an F4 flight controller, onboard Serial ELRS 2.4GHz receiver, and flies on 2S LiHV batteries delivering around 5 minutes of flight time. The Pavo Femto includes powerful LAVA 1102 brushless motors (14,000KV) with a thrust-to-weight ratio exceeding 6.75:1, helping to push its performance well beyond most sub-100-gram drones.

These advancements in drone technology and regulatory frameworks are paving the way for safer and more efficient BVLOS operations, opening up new possibilities for various industries and applications.

  1. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) introduced Part 146, a regulatory framework for technology companies providing digital infrastructure that ensures safe Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flights.
  2. ADSPs certified under Part 146 function similarly to air agencies, guiding drones to adhere to flight plans and safely avoid collisions, much like how a pilot navigates an aerial flight.
  3. The rapid development in automated data services supporting drone operations has led the FAA to design Part 146 to balance rigorous oversight with flexibility, adapting as technologies evolve.
  4. HoverAir's new Aqua drone, designed for water-based activities, utilizes technology to offer features such as 4K video, waterproofing, and autonomous flight.
  5. The BETAFPV Pavo Femto FPV drone, utilizing drone technology and a DJI O4 Air Unit, is incredibly small and lightweight, optimized for 4K/60fps video capture, demonstrating the improvements in technology driving safer and more efficient BVLOS operations.
