Volkswagen Embraces Sustainability with Hemp-Based Materials
Volkswagen is taking significant strides towards a greener future, with a focus on sustainable materials for their vehicles. The German automaker has partnered with Revoltech GmbH to develop a bio-based, hemp fiber-based imitation leather called LOVR (Leather-free, Oil-free, Vegan, Residue based). This material, intended for automotive interior surfaces, is set to be used in Volkswagen models from 2028.
Andreas Walingen, Head of Strategy at the Volkswagen brand, emphasized that the sustainable use of resources is a key pillar in Volkswagen's ACCELERATE strategy. LOVR is 100% biobased, plastic-free, biodegradable, recyclable, and designed to be a regenerative material supporting circularity and minimizing carbon emissions. The hemp fibers used in LOVR are sourced from European fields, combined with a fully biobased adhesive using specific proprietary technology.
Beyond LOVR, Volkswagen is also involved in broader hemp fiber-reinforced bio composite developments, building on materials like NAFILean-R, which incorporates recycled plastics with hemp fibers, further advancing sustainable composites for automotive applications.
Meanwhile, in the realm of cybersecurity, Trustonic is partnering with Sasken Technologies to provide advanced security options for automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Andrew Till, General Manager of Secure Platform at Trustonic, confirmed that Trustonic is committed to building a secure ecosystem of partners creating innovative solutions with the highest levels of security in place.
On a separate note, SODA.Auto has launched SODA V, a unified platform for Software, Electronics, and Electrical Architecture. This innovative solution significantly reduces time spent on routine tasks in vehicle development, allowing for new software-defined vehicles to be built in less than a year with a budget of $600,000, compared to the industry standard of $40 million.
In the automotive cybersecurity arena, VicOne and Block Harbor are hosting the Automotive Capture the Flag (CTF) 2024 competition. This global cybersecurity challenge aims to engage and educate cybersecurity enthusiasts of all skill levels, with virtual qualifying rounds through September 8, in-person finals on October 21, and an Awards Ceremony on October 23 at the 2024 Auto-ISAC Cybersecurity Summit in Detroit, Michigan.
Lastly, Ouster's Blue City traffic management solution has passed the requirements of NEMA TS2 as a detection system for traffic actuation. The solution combines Ouster's 3D lidar sensors with edge AI to capture traffic data for active traffic actuation, improving safety and efficiency while protecting the community's privacy. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded two million dollar SMART Grants to the Nashville Department of Transportation and the City of Chattanooga to make Tennessee streets safer using Blue City.
