Latest Updates in Self-Driving Vehicle Sector: WeRide, Pony.ai, AEye, and Lyft Make Headlines

In a significant step forward for autonomous vehicle technology, WeRide and Pony.ai are making strides in China and beyond.

WeRide, a leading autonomous driving technology company, has unveiled its HPC 3.0 high-performance computing platform. This platform, the first mass-produced Level 4 (L4) vehicle platform built on NVIDIA’s Thor architecture, is designed for 10 years or 300,000 km and harsh environments, supporting WeRide's global commercial deployment ambitions. The HPC 3.0 platform delivers up to 2,000 TOPS of AI compute using a dual-chip configuration and DriveOS.

This advancement has led to a reduction in the autonomous driving suite cost by 50% and a reduction in total cost of ownership by 84% compared to the previous HPC 2.0. WeRide's HPC 3.0 platform has transitioned from experimental to commercially viable, driving global expansion and partnerships that enable large-scale deployment of Level 4 autonomous vehicles across multiple continents with reduced lifecycle costs and high safety standards.

WeRide operates in over 30 cities across 10 countries and holds autonomous permits in five major markets, including Shanghai and Guangzhou in China, the UAE, France, and Singapore. The company partners with local organizations such as Chery Group and Jinjiang Taxi in Shanghai to facilitate mass production and deployment of its autonomous mobility services.

Meanwhile, Pony.ai's Apollo lidar, fully integrated into NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX platform, has enhanced AEye's commercial scalability across next-generation driver assistance and self-driving technologies. Apollo, part of AEye's 4SightTM Flex family, offers a 1-kilometer range, compact design, and behind-the-windshield integration, making it well-suited for advanced automotive applications.

Pony.ai is advancing toward large-scale production and aims to expand its autonomous fleet to 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025. The company has been granted a permit to operate fully driverless commercial Robotaxi services in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, making it the only company authorized for such operations in all four of China's tier-one cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Pony.ai plans to begin offering driverless ride-hailing in Shanghai's Jinqiao and Huamu business districts, with plans for broader expansion.

The service, offered in collaboration with Chery Group and Jinjiang Taxi, will operate on public roads in Pudong New Area, connecting major transport hubs and attractions. Pudong's strategic location, home to global corporations, financial centers, and innovation hubs, positions Pony.ai to tap into high-value user segments and drive future growth.

As for future developments, AEye's CEO Matt Fisch teased more details on upcoming developments, including the OPTIS solution aimed at broader mobility and safety sectors, to be revealed on the July 31 earnings call.

In summary, the advancements made by WeRide and Pony.ai in China are paving the way for the future of autonomous vehicle technology, with cost-effective, high-performance solutions that meet top global automotive standards and are well-suited for urban environments.
