Latvia Launches Targeted Defense Sector Boost with €3M Grant Program

Latvia's defence sector receives a significant boost with the launch of its first targeted development support mechanism. This grant programme aims to enhance the competitiveness and export potential of local defence and security companies, with a focus on innovation and collaboration with research institutions.

The programme prioritises the development of long-term underground military bunkers, durable prefabricated modular military trench systems, multifunctional military shelters, and anti-tank obstacles. These areas have been identified as crucial for Latvia's defence commitments. The initiative builds on previous grant competitions that have supported several dozen military or dual-use products, with total funding exceeding €2 million. This year's available amount reflects the increased urgency of Latvia's defence priorities. The programme emphasises the involvement of Latvian research institutions, transferring innovation potential from the general business environment into exportable military-grade products. It also aims to enhance cooperation with research institutions in developing military or dual-use products and technologies.

The launch of this targeted development support mechanism signals Latvia's commitment to strengthening its defence sector. By focusing on innovation and collaboration, the programme seeks to improve the competitiveness and exportability of local defence and security companies. This year's increased funding underscores the urgency of Latvia's defence commitments.
