Layoffs Impact 28% of Stack Overflow Staff as the Company Pursues Its 'Road to Profitability'

Stack Overflow, the popular Q&A platform for developers, is experiencing a significant shift as it navigates the rapidly evolving landscape of AI adoption in the tech industry.

The platform's volunteer moderators announced they would be going on strike this summer, due to the company's prohibition on moderating AI-generated content on the platform [1]. This decision comes as Stack Overflow opted to charge AI companies for training on its website's content [2].

In a bid to remain profitable, Stack Overflow made a large hiring push last year, virtually doubling in size to over 500 employees [3]. However, the company is now cutting about 28% of its staff, with the layoffs primarily affecting the go-to-market and surrounding teams [4].

CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar attributed the budget cuts to the economic issues impacting Stack Overflow's customers' budgets [5]. In a blog post, Chandrasekar wrote that changes were pursued through the lens of minimizing impact to the lives of Stack Overflow employees [6].

AI tools have become increasingly integrated into developer workflows, with over 80% of developers using or planning to use AI in their work by 2025 [7]. Yet, trust in AI outputs remains low, with nearly half of developers expressing skepticism about AI-generated code accuracy [7]. This ongoing reliance on human-curated sources like Stack Overflow is evident, as the platform explicitly positions itself as a trusted, human intelligence source amid growing AI-generated content online [1].

Despite the concerns about AI-induced layoffs in the tech industry, there is no direct data linking AI tools to a drop in Stack Overflow traffic or to layoffs at Stack Overflow in 2022 [8]. Industry-wide, some companies have suggested AI might reduce the need for certain software engineering roles, notably entry-level positions [2]. However, Stack Overflow’s 2025 developer survey shows most developers do not view AI as a job threat, signaling a more cautious or balanced perspective on workforce impact [2][3].

In over-moderating posts made with artificial intelligence, Stack Overflow found that this approach was turning away human contributors [9]. As a result, the platform's new moderation policy will only remove AI-generated content in specific instances [10].
