Lego Reintroduces Game Boy Replica, Commemorating 1989 Release with Authentic Design and Lenticular Display Replicating Gameplay Experience
Introducing the LEGO Game Boy Set: A Nostalgic Tribute to a Classic Gaming Device
LEGO has created a brick-built replica of the iconic Nintendo Game Boy, offering fans a chance to relive the glory days of portable gaming. The LEGO Game Boy set, priced at $59.99 USD, is a 421-piece set that captures the chunky, industrial design of the original Game Boy.
Measuring 5.5" tall and 3.5" wide, the set is a near 1:1 scale replica of the handheld device. It features pressable buttons, functional dials for volume and contrast, and a Game Pak slot that houses interchangeable brick-built cartridges. The set includes two classic cartridges: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land.
Each cartridge in the LEGO Game Boy set features a lenticular screen that displays animated scenes when viewed from different angles. The set also includes a link cable port cover, a small plastic flap often lost during the original Game Boy's ownership.
The LEGO Game Boy set is a tribute to the Game Boy's robust design and longevity. The device, first released in 1989, was known for its long battery life and sturdy construction. The set uses printed tiles instead of stickers for labels and details, which may improve the build process.
The set is more affordable than past retro gaming sets that have had price tags of $200+. It is rated for ages 18 and up and is available for pre-order starting July 24, 2025. The set will officially launch and be purchasable from October 1, 2025, via LEGO stores, LEGO.com, Amazon (US and UK), and select global retailers.
For LEGO enthusiasts, the set offers step-by-step instructions for newcomers, making it an accessible build. It serves as a nostalgic tribute to a classic era of gaming, similar to earlier LEGO Nintendo-themed sets like the NES console replica. The LEGO Game Boy set does not require any actual power to make things animated, unlike some past retro gaming sets.
