Ralf Wintergerst, President of Bitkom, highlights that AI can enhance individualized and efficient medical care, particularly in prevention and therapy. It can potentially alleviate the workload of doctors and clinics by improving diagnoses, automating documentation, and streamlining appointments, thereby allowing more time for patient care.

Intriguingly, 68% of the respondents are open to the introduction of electronic patient records (ePA). The benefits they foresee include preventing duplicate examinations, making faster diagnoses, and avoiding medication interactions.

However, a concerning 77% of respondents feel they are ill-prepared for using ePA. The national rollout of ePA after a trial phase remains voluntary for doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals, with mandatory use scheduled from October 1, 2025. Patients have the option to object to its use.

The focus is on evolving AI from task-specific automation to autonomous decision-making systems that play proactive roles in patient care. Future AI systems could proactively detect patient deterioration and suggest interventions in real-time, lightening the cognitive load of healthcare professionals.
