Massive firefighting and emergency response at Vendômer Square
In an unexpected turn of events, an incident occurred at the entrance of the Kaufland branch in Gevelsberg on Thursday at 16:35.
According to the Fire Department of Gevelsberg (Feuerwehr Gevelsberg), an unidentified person sprayed irritant gas at the entrance of the store. The incident involved the local fire department, emergency services, police, and even over-regional units from Wuppertal and various units from the Ennepe-Ruhr district.
The building was immediately evacuated, and a total of 35 individuals were affected. Of these, nine were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment as a precaution. The remaining 26 received medical attention or examinations from the fire department and emergency services on the scene.
The total duration of the incident was two and a half hours. However, the irritant gas has since dissipated, and there is currently no imminent danger. As a result, Kaufland management has decided to reopen the store.
