Medibank Private Faces Class Action Over Massive Data Breach
Medibank Private faces a class action lawsuit following a major data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of customers. Legal firm Maurice Blackburn is leading the charge, representing affected customers who have had their data compromised.
In October, Medibank Private suffered a cyber-attack that resulted in the theft of personal data from 9.7 million current and former customers. The stolen data, released this week, includes names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner is currently investigating Medibank's handling of this sensitive information.
The breach affected a significant number of customers, with approximately 160,000 Medibank customers, 300,000 ahm customers, and around 20,000 international customers having their health claims data accessed. Additionally, about 5,200 My Home Hospital patients had some personal and health claims data compromised. The Australian Cyber Security Centre began investigating Medibank's data security measures in early December.
Medibank Private chose not to pay the AUD14.7 million ransom demand, citing uncertainty over whether payment would guarantee the return of data or prevent its publication. The company believes customer credit card details and primary identity document details were not accessed. However, the released data is still a cause for concern for the affected customers, leading to the upcoming class action lawsuit.
