Medibank Private Hack Exposes 4M Customers' Sensitive Data
Australian health insurer Medibank Private has been hit by a major cyber-attack, with personal and health claims data of over four million customers stolen. The breach, which occurred in October, also compromised patient information relating to My Home Hospital, a joint venture involving Medibank, Calvary Health Care, and the South Australian Government. The attack on Medibank Private follows a similar incident in February, where Australian Clinical Labs Limited (ACL) had customer credit card and Medicare details stolen. ACL took over nine months to disclose the breach, affecting approximately 223,000 clients. Phillip Ivanic, Synopsys APAC Head of Solutions Strategy, noted the increasing frequency of data breaches in Australia for financial gain. In another recent incident, Queensland-based body corporate and community management firm SSKB confirmed an unauthorised data breach on October 27. Hackers accessed SSKB's IT network, downloaded data, and posted a ransom demand. Upon discovery, SSKB deactivated the affected systems and secured its IT environment. These high-profile cyber-attacks highlight the growing threat to sensitive health data in Australia's healthcare sector. Medibank Private and SSKB have both assured customers that they are working with cybersecurity experts to investigate the incidents and strengthen their IT networks. Affected customers are advised to monitor their credit reports and be vigilant against potential identity fraud.
