MG unveils affordable pricing for their forthcoming electric vehicles, IM5 and IM6, which come as a pleasant surprise
New MG IM5 Sedan and IM6 SUV Bring Competitive EVs to Australia
MG Motor has launched its premium electric vehicle (EV) lineup, "Intelligence in Motion" (IM), in Australia with the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV. These tech-driven models promise strong performance, competitive range, and advanced features to shake up the Australian EV market.
Unique Features
The IM5 and IM6 share a tech-forward design philosophy, with sleek exteriors and innovative features. The IM6 SUV boasts a smoother, more rounded design, flush door handles, slim LED lights, a coupe-like roofline, and an optional panoramic roof. Both vehicles feature a prominent 26.3-inch digital display across the dashboard and a 10.5-inch touchscreen on the center console for auxiliary functions.
Performance Specifications
Both models offer single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD variants, with the Performance AWD variants delivering up to 572 kW of power. The IM5 sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, making it one of the fastest sedans on the market. The IM6 SUV follows closely behind with a 0-100 km/h time of 3.48 seconds.
Charging times for the larger 100 kWh battery pack are as short as just over 15 minutes, while the smaller 75 kWh battery will charge in 20 minutes. The IM5 and IM6 both come with a seven-year warranty when serviced within the MG dealer network across the country.
Pricing Details in Australia
While precise Australian prices are not yet available, UK pricing suggests that the MG IM5 and IM6 will be competitively priced. The IM5 standard 75 kWh model is expected to start at around AUD 75,000, with Performance variants costing around AUD 92,000. The IM6 is expected to start at around AUD 91,000. MG aims to target a global price benchmark of USD $33,000 (~AUD 48,000), indicating attractive pricing strategies in Australia as well.
Additional Notes
Orders for the IM5 and IM6 opened in June 2025, with deliveries expected from September 2025. MG's parent company, SAIC, has partnered with Alibaba to promote the IM sub-brand in Australia, called "IM presented by MG." A larger IM Motors SUV, possibly the IM9 extended-range hybrid, is also under consideration for the Australian market.
Both the IM5 and IM6 feature a four-wheel steering system, lowering their turning radius to that of smaller cars like hatchbacks. The estimated delivery time for both models is 12 weeks, suggesting late Q3 or early Q4 deliveries this year.
In summary, the MG IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV offer competitive long electric ranges, fast charging, high-performance options, premium features, and aggressive pricing designed to disrupt the Australian EV market in their segments. With innovative, AI-inspired features, high performance, and premium design and interior finishes, the IM models are set to make a significant impact in the Australian EV market.
