Military to Receive Air Defense Fire Control Radars
The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a significant contract worth nearly Rs 2,000 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of Atulya Air Defence Fire Control Radars. The deal, which took place on Friday, was witnessed by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The Atulya radar, a state-of-the-art system designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by BEL, promises to enhance the Indian Army's operational readiness. This indigenous radar system provides round-the-clock surveillance, target acquisition, tracking, and fire control of air defense guns for point defense against threats like fighter aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The Atulya radar also boasts inbuilt Electronic Counter Measure (ECM) features, enabling it to operate effectively in hostile electronic environments. Its modular design enhances operational flexibility for deployment and maintenance in diverse conditions. Furthermore, the radar system functions under all weather conditions, day and night, to detect and neutralize aerial threats at short and very short ranges.
This procurement is a pivotal step towards encouraging indigenous industries, with the deal expected to boost the growth of indigenous Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The deal also encourages Indian MSMEs through components' manufacturing and raw material supply.
The procurement of these radars is part of the modernization of the air defense regiments and falls under the Government’s push for indigenous defense technology under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, with a minimum of 70% indigenous content.
