Who'd have thought 25 million eyeballs on something could be a letdown? Well, that's precisely the case with The Electric State, the latest cinematic extravaganza from the Russo Brothers featuring Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. With a whopping $300 million price tag and no ticket-paying patrons, it's a hefty investment indeed.

You'd reckon a film this expensive would've smashed Netflix viewing records, but that's not been the case. Despite racking up an impressive 25.2 million views in its debut week and becoming Netflix's top movie globally for the week, things aren't as shiny as they seem.

Compared to other swashbuckling Netflix blockbusters like Red Notice, with its 75.6 million views, or even Don't Look Up with its 46.6 million views, The Electric State doesn't exactly shine. In fact, it ranks 15th on Netflix's all-time views list, just edging out Rebel Moon: Part One and Rebel Moon: Part Two. That's not exactly the kind of company you'd want to keep when your movie boasts A-list stars and a sky-high budget.

Given that Netflix measures its views as total hours watched divided by the runtime, you'd think viewers must've tuned in but tuned out pretty quick. Could The Electric State still claw its way into Netflix's top 10 all-time list? It's theoretically possible, but given the poor critical reception (only 15% on Rotten Tomatoes), it seems highly unlikely that the film will trend upward after its big opening week. Usually, things go in the opposite direction.

So, what went wrong? Some believe it's the early buzz surrounding the film that hurt its numbers. With middling reviews, it didn't garner the same excitement as other Netflix offerings. However, this isn't to say that The Electric State is a cinematic disaster. It's a watchable flick to pass the time with no excruciating effort. But it doesn't seem like even that is happening.

  1. Despite its A-list stars and sky-high budget, the future of The Electric State may not include a spot in Netflix's top 10 all-time list, given its poor critical reception and rapid viewer drop-off.
  2. The Runtime for The Electric State might not be long enough to account for its low percentage of viewers in comparison to other Netflix hits like Red Notice and Don't Look Up.
  3. There's a possibility that tech-savvy movie buffs might find The Electric State on Io9, a popular site for science fiction, fantasy, and genre news, to get insight into the movie's realization of futuristic technology.
  4. Netflix viewers might turn to their movie preference lists once they finish watching other strong Netflix offerings, leaving The Electric State in the dust, an outcome that isn't exactly ideal for a movie with such a substantial budget.
