Netflix, Provide the Linear TV Functionality for Unthinking Series Marathons

Relaxing at the close of a tiring day, I typically sprawl out on the couch, initiate my Apple TV, and start multiple streaming services.

Streaming Woes and the Promise of Direct

In my laid-back evening ritual, I often find myself aimlessly hopping between streaming services, much like opening a fridge only to find the same leftovers staring back at me. It's a bizarre habit, I know, but finding something decent to watch remains elusive.

That's where linear programming catches my eye (minus the irritating ads, of course)—a feature that's almost nonexistent in my usual haunts like Netflix. While Netflix is testing a solution in France that gives me hope for streaming solvency. Introducing Direct, a web-based, adaptive content streaming feature that curates a continuous, real-time feed of Netflix's popular hits, from European dramas to international comedy series.

Tacked onto the corner next to your profile, Direct essentially transforms your Netflix experience into a lean-back, effortless affair. According to Netflix, the French version of Direct will include everything from Family Business to The Crown, Unorthodox, and more. The service will be available to French subscribers by December.

Unfortunately, Netflix informed Gizmodo that there are no current plans to make Direct available to users outside of France.

"We're always striving to make content discovery a breeze for our members," Netflix said in a statement. This browser-based linear feed experiment offers a hassle-free, sit-back streaming experience. We test features like this in different regions, making them more widely available if they resonate with our audience."

Details on how Netflix plans to include episodes from linear series like The Crown in Direct remain unclear. However, given the constant influx of new content and the vastness of Netflix's library, Direct could function as a tantalizing sampler platter of Netflix originals to lure viewers who might not otherwise be hooked or may have missed a gem.

To be honest, Direct sounds like exactly what I need to bring an end to my endless browsing adventures. Netflix, if you're listening, give us the live TV experience without ads that we crave. Please, put an end to the infinite scrolling conundrum once and for all.
