Syeda Irtizaali Joins Netflix as Director of Unscripted for the UK
Netflix recruits Syeda Irtizaali, former executive of 'The Traitors', as head of unscripted series in the U.K.
Syeda Irtizaali has joined Netflix as the Director of Unscripted for the UK, filling a vacancy left by Ben Kelly who announced his departure from the streaming giant in May. Irtizaali will be working alongside Anne Mensah's team at Netflix, responsible for programming the U.K. and Ireland's unscripted series slate.
Irtizaali's impressive career in the media industry began as a journalist with BBC News. She later moved into production, working with various independent production companies including Monkey, Planet 24, Diverse, At It, and Brighter.
At the BBC, Irtizaali oversaw entertainment, documentaries, factual entertainment, specialist factual, arts, daytime, and Storyville. Some of the shows she commissioned include "Alan Carr: Chatty Man," "The Million Pound Drop," "The Big Narstie Show," "The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan," and "The Last Leg."
Irtizaali's tenure at the BBC also saw her secure and manage hit series such as the British edition of "Traitors" and "Destination X." The latter was a result of a partnership between the BBC and NBCUniversal, a partnership that Irtizaali played a significant role in orchestrating.
Prior to joining Netflix, Irtizaali held the position of interim director of unscripted at the BBC. The person who succeeded her in this role is not publicly disclosed.
Ben Kelly, credited with building the unscripted team at Netflix in the U.K., helped build a slate that included hit shows such as "Too Hot to Handle" and "Love is Blind." Irtizaali's new role at Netflix is significant as she will be responsible for continuing this success in the field of unscripted series.
The partnership between the BBC and NBCUniversal, which resulted in part of the series "Destination X," is a testament to Irtizaali's ability to forge successful collaborations in the media industry. As she embarks on this new chapter at Netflix, Irtizaali is poised to make a significant impact on the U.K.'s unscripted series landscape.
