Netflix's Recently Launched Series Garners Deserving 98% Critics' Approval
It hasn't been long since a Netflix show scored this critically acclaimed, but that's exactly what's happened with their latest spy series, which boasts a remarkable 98% score from a few dozen reviews.
This show is none other than Shadows Over London, the new thriller starring Keira Knightley, marking her significant return to the limelight after securing the top spot on Netflix's top 10 list. She's arguably the most-watched actress in the country presently, outside of the leading duo of Wicked on the big screen.
Having had the pleasure of watching Shadows Over London myself since its release, it's easy to see why it's garnered such high praise. If you'd prefer to enter the series blind, stop reading now, but I'm only going to touch on light spoilers regarding its theme and execution.
Shadows Over London stars Knightley as spy character Emily Worthington, whose undercover assignment of a decade has lead her to marry the UK's defense secretary and raising two children with him. Ben Whishaw portrays Jackson, a long-time confidant who's always had her back.
Emily's cover is in jeopardy following the mysterious death of a fellow spy with whom she had an affair. A shadowy force is then seen attempting to take control of the UK from within, leaving Emily to uncover the true mastermind behind it all.
Shadows Over London distinguishes itself through various aspects. Firstly, it's a spy series that isn't solely focused on moral righteousness, as Emily works for a private organization independent of any government. While such a premise isn't unheard of, the organization in question isn't a symbol of virtue, as demonstrated by Emily's ruthless superior, brilliantly portrayed by Sarah Lancashire from Happy Valley.
Secondly, the series transcends its genre to delve into human emotion and connection. Neither Emily nor Jackson is devoid of feelings, with both grappling with individual heartbreaks and personal tragedies. Emily's mission is less about adhering to laws and orders, and more about seeking vengeance.
It's refreshing to see Knightley in such a prominent role again. It's been a while since she's been so featured, and this role arguably marks her biggest TV venture yet. She's primarily dabbled in film, with her last live-action TV appearance dating back to 2002. But with Shadows Over London, Knightley has truly found her sweet spot. I wholeheartedly recommend this series for action and spycraft fanatics, with potential for future seasons on the horizon.
