Tesla Unveils Model Y L and Model 3+ in China, Offering Long-Range Electric Vehicles with Distinct Features

Tesla, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the launch of two new models in China - the Model Y Long Range (Model Y L) and the Model 3 Plus (Model 3+). Both vehicles are set to hit the market in September, promising to offer some of the highest ranges in the China EV market.

Key Differences

The Model Y L and Model 3+ boast several key differences. The Model Y L, a larger and taller SUV, measures approximately 4976 mm in length, 1920 mm in width, and 1668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3040 mm. This six-seat vehicle is designed for more cabin space and comfort, making it an attractive option for families. In contrast, the Model 3+, a sedan with typical dimensions, usually seats five and has a smaller footprint.

In terms of power, the Model Y L features a dual-motor setup with a 142 kW front motor and a 198 kW rear motor, offering a total power output of around 340 kW and a top speed of 201 km/h. The Model 3+, on the other hand, is equipped with a single rear-wheel-drive motor with a peak output of 225 kW, an upgrade from the previous 194 kW.

The Model Y L is powered by an 82 kWh LG ternary NMC battery, providing it with a CLTC range of 751 km, making it one of the highest in the China EV category. The Model 3+, meanwhile, runs on a slightly smaller 78.4 kWh LG ternary NMC battery, offering a CLTC range of up to 830 km, though two versions of the Model 3+ are listed with CLTC ranges of 830 km and 800 km.

Competition in the China EV Market

Both the Model Y L and Model 3+ are positioned among the most competitive long-range EVs in the Chinese market. They offer some of the highest ranges in the market, especially under the CLTC cycle, which tends to give optimistic figures but is the local standard. The Model 3+’s 830 km range and Model Y L’s 751 km place them at the top tier of long-range EVs, competing with other premium local brands like BYD and Geely’s Galaxy series.

Tesla’s use of LG’s ternary NMC batteries and updated motors contributes to their superior range and power balance. The Model Y L’s longer wheelbase and six-seat configuration notably differentiate it from competitors by targeting customers wanting larger family SUVs with extended range.

Delivery Figures

In July, Tesla delivered 67,886 Model 3 and Model Y units from its Shanghai plant, a decrease of 5.2 percent from June and 8.4 percent year-on-year. Despite this, the company remains optimistic about the Chinese market, with the launch of the Model Y L and Model 3+ being part of its efforts to stay competitive.

In conclusion, the Model 3+ offers higher range and peak power as a rear-wheel drive sedan, while the Model Y L is a larger, six-seat SUV with slightly less range but more space and dual motors. Both models are expected to launch in September and will put both Tesla and its competitors in direct competition in the booming China EV market.
