New Mexico Kicks Off Two-Year Pilot for Electric School Buses
GreenPower Motor Company Inc. and the New Mexico Economic Development Department have kicked off a two-year pilot project, introducing all-electric school buses to the state. The project aims to assess the viability and reliability of fast charging in various environments and circumstances, supporting New Mexico's goal of 100% zero-carbon electricity supply by 2045.
The project, funded with a $5 million capital outlay appropriation from the state, involves three GreenPower Type A Nano BEAST school buses in the first year. These buses, manufactured by GreenPower, a leading producer of all-electric medium and heavy-duty vehicles, offer a range of up to 140 miles and feature dual port charging with Level 2 and DC Fast Charging capabilities.
The buses will rotate among Las Vegas City Schools, West Las Vegas Schools, and Monte del Sol Charter School, providing real-world testing in diverse conditions. GreenPower will install charging systems, provide training, and track telematics for the buses during the pilot project. If successful, the state plans to support an additional $15 million for more school buses after two successful pilot phases.
This pilot project marks a significant step towards New Mexico's sustainability goals. By assessing the practicality of fast charging for electric school buses, the state can pave the way for wider adoption of clean energy solutions in its transportation sector.
